Navistar Recalls International Trucks

At the end of March 2017, the truck manufacturer, Navistar, announced that it would have to recall over 2,700 of its International trucks. This is due to a problem with the air dryer mounting bracket, which was found to be weak and at an increased risk of breakage. This could lead to the air dryer pulling away from the truck frame and cause further leaks in the truck’s air system This includes a possible loss of pressure in the air brakes and a subsequently increased risk of crashes.

If this problem occurs, drivers should expect to see the air gauge pressure drop, which should sound a warning buzzer in the cab. If the air brakes are affected, the truck will take longer to brake to a stop than normal. Drivers who notice these problems should bring their trucks in for inspection and repairs immediately.

Navistar truck models potentially affected by the weakened air dryer supports include the:

  • 2016-2017 International ProStar (manufactured between May 5, 2015, and December 22, 2016)
  • International RH (manufactured between March 30, 2016, and December 14, 2016)
  • International LT (manufactured between June 1, 2015, and January 12, 2017)
  • 2017 International LoneStar (manufactured between June 7 and December 20, 2016).

Owners of the affected models, as well as dealers who sell those models, should have received a warning letter from Navistar since May.

Navistar will remediate the defect on recalled trucks by replacing the flawed mounting bracket with a heavier, stronger model that should not be at risk of breakage. There will be no charge for this service.

There have, as yet, been no accidents or injuries reported as a result of this defect. However, the increased risk is a real threat to both the truck driver and other motorists, so owners of possibly affected trucks should not ignore the recall notice.
